Histo-Pathological Evaluation of Drug Allergy Observed With Gingival Overgrowth Induced by Phenytoin: A Case Report*
نویسنده
چکیده
Gingival overgrowths are lesions which can be seen due to diffe rent reasons. Phenytoin (PHT), the drug used in the treatment of epilepsy, is probably one of the commonest causes of gingival overgrowth. In the presented case, a male patient aged 23, who has been taking PHT for the treatment of epilepsy, subsequently manifested by the enlarged gingival tissue, which was cut out using gingivectomy procedure. The biopsy samples, which were taken during surgery, were assessed histo-pathologically. Histo-pathological evaluation showed that there were deepened rete-peg structures, and a connective tissue rich in collagen substance. Moreover, a dense plasmocyte cell infiltration was observed. This fact was interpreted as an allergic effect in gingival tissue caused by PHT.

Periodontal Management of Phenytoin Induced Gingival Enlargement: A Case Report
Gingival enlargement or gingival overgrowth is the abnormal growth of periodontal tissues. Drug induced gingival enlargement is one of the most common cause of enlarged gingiva. Drugs associated with gingival enlargement are divided in to three major groups namely anticonvulsants, immunosuppressant and calcium channel blockers [1]. Among the anticonvulsants, phenytoin is most commonly associate...
متن کاملNonsurgical Management of Nifedipine Induced Gingival Overgrowth
Drug-induced gingival overgrowth is frequently associated with three particular drugs: phenytoin, cyclosporin, and nifedipine. As gingival enlargement develops, it affects the normal oral hygiene practice and may interfere with masticatory functions. The awareness in the medical community about this possible side effect of nifedipine is less when compared to the effects of phenytoin and cyclosp...
متن کاملUsing Salivary Nitrite and Nitrate Levels as a Biomarker for Drug-Induced Gingival Overgrowth
AIM Drug-induced gingival overgrowth has a multifactorial nature and the pathogenesis is still uncertain. It has been suggested that Nitric Oxide (NO) might play a role in the pathogenesis of drug-induced gingival overgrowth due to the contribution of NO to immune response and matrix degradation. NO levels in biological fluids have been used as a diagnostic biomarker in many diseases. The aim o...

Objective To evaluate for the presence of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) in drug (phenytoin, cyclosporine, and nifedipine)-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO) and to compare it with healthy controls in the absence of overgrowth. Materials and Methods Thirty-five patients were chosen for the study and segregated into study (25) and control groups (10). The study group consisted of pheny...

Context: Gingival overgrowth can be associated with pharmacotherapy. Among the offending medications of gingival overgrowth, phenytoin is the first reported and the most common agent. Evidence Acquisition: A literature search was performed with the relevant key words in different databases such as Scopus, Medline, Embase, and Google scholar. Results: About 50% of individuals receiving phenytoin...
